How to Prevent Frozen Pipes

Protect your home before the cold weather hits with these simple steps:

  • Allow a small trickle of cold water to run. Moving water is less likely to freeze.
  • Open under sink cabinet doors so warm air can reach the pipes.
  • Use a small fan to help circulate warm air under your cabinets.
  • Seal exterior openings such as basement doors, windows, and crawl spaces with weather stripping, caulk, or sealant.
  • Insulate external or exposed pipes with pipe insulation.
  • Winterize outdoor water systems before the first freeze. Drain your sprinkler system and disconnect, drain, and store outdoor hoses. Shut off and drain exterior faucets.

How to Thaw Frozen Pipes

If little or no water is flowing from your faucets, your pipes may be frozen. You may also see frost on the outside of the pipe. If you believe a pipe is frozen, take the following steps:

  1. Turn off the main water valve to your home.
  2. Open a faucet to allow melted water to escape. Start with the lowest hot and cold faucets in your home, such as a basement sink. Note: Turning off the main water may also shut off any fire protection system connected to your plumbing.
  3. Wrap warm, wet towels around the frozen section of pipe or use an approved electric pipe warmer.
  4. Do not use open flames or direct high heat. This can cause injury, fire, or damage to the pipe.

If the pipe has burst or you are unable to thaw it safely, contact Mr. Rooter Windsor for immediate assistance.

Frozen Pipes FAQs

How do I know if my pipes are frozen?

Common signs include little or no water from faucets, visible frost on exposed pipes, or strange sounds when taps are turned on.

Can a frozen pipe thaw on its own?

Yes, but it can be risky. As ice melts, pressure can build up inside the pipe and cause it to burst. Controlled thawing is safer.

What should I do if a pipe bursts?

Turn off the main water supply right away and call Mr. Rooter Windsor. Do not use electrical appliances in the affected area because of the risk of shock.

Is it safe to use a space heater or torch to thaw pipes?

No. Both open flames and direct high heat can damage pipes or create safety hazards. Use warm towels, safe heating products, or call a licensed technician.

Which areas in my home are most at risk?

Basements, crawl spaces, attics, garages, exterior walls, and under sink spaces are the most vulnerable because of low insulation and colder temperatures.

How long does it take for a frozen pipe to burst?

There is no exact timeline. Pipes burst when frozen water expands and pressure builds behind the blockage. It can happen quickly or take several hours, and sometimes the pipe will not burst at all.
